When was the last time you asked your boss, colleague or client for exactly what you wanted? When was the last time you said what works for you instead of trying to figure out what is best for the other person? When was the last time you requested something you needed, even though you thought it might inconvenience the person you were asking? In a recent survey of issues faced by introverts, one of the items people said mattered most was to "Value my needs and wants as much as others." While we are willing to work long hours and go the extra mile for someone else, many of us find it difficult to be as dedicated to honoring our own needs and wants.
So, what DO you want?
Is there a new project you'd like to work on? A promotion? Do you want to leave early to catch your child's soccer game? If you work for yourself, do you want to do your business in a new way, a way that works better for you?Whatever it is, get busy! Figure out what you'd really, really like to see happen in your work... and start asking! If this idea feels a little selfish or uncomfortable, here are five great benefits to asking for what you want.
1. You Get Better Results - Telling the truth is a law of the universe. Unnecessary complications, strained communication and a ton of emotional energy are minimized when you shoot straight.
2. Others Will Respect You - Asking for what you want is an attractive quality. People will admire you and give you more respect because you have something they want too.
3. You'll Respect Yourself More - Actively expressing yourself in a non-demanding way will increase your self-confidence.
4. You'll Have More Energy - You'll find more lightness, creative space and productive energy to invest in your work.5. You'll Often Get It! - That's right! Get ready...you might be surprised by all you get just because you asked.
